Are These Job Skills on Your Resume?

Whether you are looking to make a lateral career move or advance through the ranks of management, there are some job skills that can set you apart from other candidates, regardless of your industry. If your resume does not include these job skills, there's a good chance the hiring manager won't give your application a second glance. If you are searching for a job, make sure you list these skills on your professional resume.

A candidate who knows how to use social media effectively is very attractive to potential employers, says Kerry Hannon, an expert on career transitions. However, having a neglected Twitter account does not warrant a mention of social media experience on your resume. If you want to list social media as one of your job skills, you must be able to demonstrate your expertise to hiring managers.

Participate in Facebook groups related to your industry, make regular updates to your personal blog or publish professional-quality articles on LinkedIn. Hiring managers will take your claims more seriously if you are able to demonstrate that you engage social media users and share information in a professional manner.

Data analytics is one of the hottest job skills in today's competitive labor market. Employers want to hire people who can look at large volumes of data and develop plans for achieving certain metrics. Almost every department, from marketing to sales, uses data to set goals, so you can use your data analytics experience to break into almost any industry.

No matter what industry you are in, problem solving is one of the job skills you need for success. Customer service agents have to calm frustrated customers, marketing managers must determine the best way to sell more products and human resources managers must decide how to balance the interests of the company with the interests of employees. All of these employees use problem-solving skills to save money, increase customer satisfaction or reach sales targets. If you can solve problems creatively, you have an even better chance of attracting attention from recruiters and department managers.

Self-management is another great skill to include in your professional resume because it shows that you can prioritize your workload, meet deadlines and produce quality work without needing someone to micromanage every task. This is especially important if you are looking for a job with a small business or start-up company that doesn't have a huge workforce. These companies don't have enough supervisors available to micromanage workers and get their own work done, making it especially important for employees to be able to manage their own time.

Your resume must include information that distinguishes you from other applicants and makes hiring managers want to learn more about you. Whether you are looking for a mid-level position or a promotion to management, including these job skills in your resume can help you get more interviews and improve your chances of getting the job you want.
