How Can You Tell If An Interview Is Going Well?

Posted by in Career Advice

One of the most stressful parts of a job search is the interview. So much worry and preparation goes into it that by the time you walk into the office for the interview, you are already a mess. When you are in the moment, it is hard to tell how it is going. You spend so much of your time worrying about making a good impression that it is difficult to tell if they are just doing their job or if they are excited about you as a candidate for the job.

So how can you tell if an interview is going well? Here are some things to look out for:

  • Watch their body language- When an interviewer is interested in you, they tend to smile, nod and lean forward. In any situation, these body language cues can tell you that someone is eager to hear what you have to say. However, if they lean back and don't smile, don't worry. Not everyone is as expressive
  • The interview last longer than expected- If the interview is quick and rushed, it is a pretty good sign that the company isn't interested. When the interview takes longer, it means that they wanted to talk to you enough to risk their schedules being a little behind.
  • They give lots of details- If they aren't seriously considering you as a potential employee, they won't bother with giving you much more information about the position. When the discussion veers into problems the company is having and goals for the position, you can be confident that they are seriously considering you.
  • The interviewer is actually talking to you rather than asking a series of questions- When an interviewer drops the script and talks to you as a person, it is a good sign that they are thinking about how you will fit in with the company. It is important at this point to still keep impressing them with your professionalism. This isn't the time to forget where you are and mistake this personal connection with an opening to make disparaging remarks about previous employers.

Of course, the best way to know if an interview is going well is when they offer you the job before you leave. But, keep your eye out for these types of behaviors to get an idea of how the interview is going. If you are concerned that the interview is going horribly wrong, don't worry, there is still time to turn it around.
