How to Get Out of the Fog and Be Successful in Business

Posted by in Career Advice

According to the National Department of Weights and Measures, all the moisture in a dense, thick, fog blanketing seven city blocks to a depth of 100 feet, could be put into a single glass of water. This amazing scientific fact is almost incomprehensible to the human mind. To think that this blinding mist amounts to only a single glass of water, and yet, prevents us from seeing more than fifty feet ahead in the vehicle we are driving, is amazing!

What is even more amazing, is that this kind of thinking is how many people limit success in their business lives. Let me explain. When a problem comes up, it is easy to assume that the apparent circumstances are the reasons why the problem exists. These circumstances might seem insurmountable, painful and expensive to fix.

Let’s use your computer as an example. One day as you are using your personal computer you suddenly get an error message and your computer crashes. What is the first thing that goes though your mind? If you are like most of us, you think trouble, and a lot of it! You begin to think you are probably going have to replace the computer, and since you have not been backing up your computer on a regular basis, you wonder how you will ever recapture all of your lost data. Life is looking very, very bad.

After much consternation, you make a call to your computer technician, wondering how much time and money it will cost you to fix this problem. After a few moments on the phone with you, he makes a few suggestions. You try them and then restart your computer. Wonder of wonders, it works smoother, and faster than it did before.

You see, what you perceived as the problem with your computer, was very similar to the analogy of the thick fog I mentioned earlier. The cause of the fog is a harmless mixture of moisture and air. Once you realize that you are not really threatened, you can take steps to overcome the stress and problems that have been created.

So, the next time you run into trouble, get some additional insight from others in clarifying how you see the problem. Before you know it, you will have figured out a solution and not stay lost in the fog.
