A job interview gives you a chance to show employers your professionalism, suitability for the position and unique qualities that put you ahead of other applicants. Take a look at these 10 basic interviewing tips that can help you avoid missteps during an interview.

1. Do Your Research

Find out as much as possible about the company before your interview. Check out LinkedIn as well as the company's official website. This research prepares you to talk knowledgeably about the company.

2. Prepare Questions

Make a list of possible questions to ask your interviewers. It's a good idea to prepare questions that show your enthusiasm for the position and company.

3. Know Your Worth

Review your achievements, and don't hesitate to mention them during your job interview. Look over your resume, and prepare yourself to talk more deeply about your past job successes.

4. Wear Appropriate Attire

Dress for the position. A corporate job typically requires corporate attire, such as a full suit. If you're interviewing for a casual job, wear business casual attire, such as slacks, a button-up shirt and a tie. Always make sure your clothes are clean and neat.

5. Bring Your Paperwork

Carry along multiple copies of your resume plus any credentials you have. Be sure to have all your ID cards with you in case a hiring decision is made on the spot. Also, bring a notebook and a couple of pens for taking notes.

6. Have References Ready

Bring a list of references who are familiar with your work. Try to secure at least three references, and ask them for permission beforehand to prepare them for the call.

7. Stay Confident and Alert

There are a few things you can do to ease your nerves before a job interview. Prepare everything the night before, get a good night's sleep, wake up early and plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the meeting. While you wait, take few deep breaths and stay positive. During the interview stay present and alert, and carefully listen to your interviewers.

8. Be on Time

Do everything within your power to ensure you are not late to your job interview. Leave early in case of traffic delays or other unexpected problems along the way.

9. Silence Your Cellphone

Always turn off your cellphone before your interview begins. Show your interviewers that you value their time by giving them your full attention.

10. Be Ready to Negotiate

Remember that a job interview is a two-way process. Although it is unlikely to get a job offer at a first interview, you still need to be prepared to negotiate salary, benefits and perks, just in case an offer is forthcoming. Having your requirements firmly in mind also prepares you for further interviews and a job offer down the line.

Beyond these basic interviewing tips, practicing beforehand is one of the best ways to get ready for an interview. Make a list of difficult interview questions, and practice answering them in front of a mirror. Then, ask a friend to help you conduct a mock job interview. The right combination of preparation and practice helps ensure your interviewers see your best qualities and improves your chances of getting a job offer.
