You don't need to reinvent the wheel to become a successful leader. Instead, look at the common traits that other leaders have to help you determine where you need to improve. Not all successful leaders have MBAs from Harvard, but most leaders are smart. Whether they’ve learned what they know from life experience, are self-taught or attended a prestigious university, they all made learning a top priority. Successful leaders never stop searching for new things to learn about, and neither should you.
Leaders who are at the top of their game all have one thing in common; they are all passionate about what they do. Passion for their work is one of the most important common traits that successful leaders possess. It’s passion that creates their drive to succeed. Passion is what keeps them going. It helped push them through rough times and guided them to success.
Unfortunately, you can’t fake passion. You have to find something in your job that you’re passionate about and run with it. The good news is, there are a lot of different small jobs that managers do each day. If you’re passionate about helping others succeed, make your main focus your team’s success. Work with them to make them the top of the department. If you’re passionate about your company’s products, you need to be managing a sales team. Companies are comprised about several different departments. Find the one that you’re the most passionate about, and do what it takes to secure a job in that department.
As you age, your level of curiosity starts to diminish. It’s completely normal. The more you learn and know, the less you have to be curious about. Many successful leaders have retained an almost child-like level of curiosity that driven by their need to learn as much as they possibly can. Successful leaders constantly learn new things ask questions, and read about business-related topics. Fortunately, you don’t have to learn how to be curious in order to become a successful leader. If you’re passionate about your work, curiosity comes naturally. Passion makes you want to learn as much as you can about your field. Passion doesn’t just keep you going day-to-day, it increases your level of curiosity so that you want to learn as much as you can in order to gain the intelligence that other successful leaders in your field possess.
Being a successful leader isn’t always easy. However, if you’re curious about the possibilities you have before you, and you continue to learn new things on a daily basis, you can become as smart as other successful leaders in your field. Smart enough to make yourself a success.
