Get Control of Your Day With These 10 Tips

By the end of the workweek, you're likely dragging as a result of the physically and mentally demanding duties you've faced during days prior. Don't let yourself run out of steam or get bogged down with stress. Consider these 10 tips to take control of your day and be more productive.

1. Set Daily Goals

Start by making a list of the top five priorities in your day, and decide how much you can accomplish. Determine which deadlines are coming up so you can monitor your progress.

2. Delegate Duties

Don't be afraid to ask for help. This applies to life at the office and at home. If you need to focus on a project with a looming due date, ask a co-worker to handle your daily reports. When you need to stay late in the evening, count on your spouse to take care of dinner.

3. Keep Your Workspace Organized

Make sure your desk is free of clutter that impedes your productivity, and clean up digital files. An organized workspace helps you be more efficient throughout your day.

4. Recognize Your Stressors

What things cause you the most stress throughout your day? Are noisy co-workers disrupting your workflow? Does your ringing phone interrupt you constantly? Take steps to eliminate these stressors by closing your office door or turning down the volume on your phone.

5. Step Away From the Screen

Take time throughout your day to get away from computer monitors, tablets, smartphones and other devices. This helps you avoid eye strain and decreases your stress levels.

6. Avoid Multitasking

Focus your attention on one thing at a time so you're able to do your best work. Whether you're composing an email, returning a phone call, creating a presentation or conversing with a colleague, commit yourself completely to the task at hand.

7. Take Notice of Your Productivity Habits

Get to know your work habits, and recognize those times in the day when you're most alert and productive. If you're raring to go in the morning, focus on important tasks then. If you're more productive after lunch, save significant projects for that time.

8. Soak Up the Natural Light

If you're fortunate enough to have a workspace with windows, keep your blinds open to keep you awake. Otherwise, go for a walk outside during your break, or eat lunch in the sunshine.

9. Take Time for Yourself

Make sure to get away from your desk a few times throughout your workday. Grab a snack, take a walk or drink a cup of coffee to re-energize yourself.

10. Plan for Tomorrow

Before you leave the office, decide what's on the agenda for tomorrow. Determine which meetings are scheduled and whether any preparation is needed.
