Get Ready for High-Tech Micro-Hotel Rooms

Ready or not, a new breed of high-tech micro-hotel room may soon be coming to a city near you. Similar to the rooms inside Yotels and Qbic Hotels, the latest micro-hotel concept features tiny rooms designed for airport hotel use. Yes, in most cases, you'll find these in airports, not in a separate building you shuttle away to from the airport.

Early designs will feature a twin bed with a slide-out table to serve as your nightstand/dining table/desk. A flat-screen TV mounted on the wall at the foot of the bed provides news, stock reports and entertainment. And a full-length mirror adds to the much-needed perception of space. The toilet will be located somewhere behind the bed (unless, of course, there's a shared bathroom outside).

The micro-hotel trend is designed for very short stays and is expected to come with reduced prices compared to your standard accommodations. Minimalism is prized here. Luxury will take on a new definition as cost-conscious travelers eschew conspicuous extravagance in favor of simple creature comforts and high-tech "must have" toys. At a premium will be personal time, private space, clean environmental comfort and, of course, high-speed web connections.

The Japanese have had these mini-hotels for a long time. They like them for their practicality and economy. It's the wave of the future. And it's coming sooner than you think.
