Back to School Business Supplies List

Posted by in Career Advice

It’s almost my favorite time of year again. Maybe it’s because my birthday’s in the fall that I’m particularly fond of the sound of leaves rustling and the smell of glue in the air. It’s back to school shopping!!!

There’s just something so refreshing about aisles and aisles lined with fresh, crisp, unmarked reams of paper. All that potential paperwork just waiting to be transformed into tests, essays, drawings, and notes. Bins of unused pens and pencils, never-marked markers and unbroken crayons sitting there soon to document history and draft dreams; it’s exhilarating.

I love that even as an adult I still get to enjoy the thrill of buying school supplies even though now I’m stocking up on essentials for my home office. If you’re looking for a job or managing a business out of your house here’s a general list of supplies almost everyone needs to have on hand:

  • Blue, black and red ball point pens
  • Permanent markers
  • Mechanical pencils
  • Highlighters
  • Dry erase markers
  • White board
  • Paper clips
  • Stapler
  • Staples
  • File folders
  • Invisible tape
  • Envelopes
  • Post-it notes
  • Index cards
  • 3 ring binders
  • Lined notebook paper
  • Legal pads
  • Printer paper
  • Resume Paper
  • Printable lables
  • Calendar
  • Planner
  • Postage Stamps
  • Erasers
  • Scissors
  • Rubber bands
  • Ink cartridges
  • Hole punch
  • USB/Flash/Jump/Pen drive or portable storage

When trying to cash in big on back to school savings it’s important to beat the mad rush of parents and children at the box stores. Target and Wal-Mart both boom with back to school business so once school has started the supplies will be scarce, especially if you’re looking for anything trendy.

Don’t just buy a bunch of stuff without having a space plan for where you want to put everything or you will sabotage yourself. Office supplies will become lost if you stuff them away somewhere or damaged if you are constantly tripping over them. Consider adding a few organizational items to your purchase as well.

Sometimes sorters used elsewhere in your home can come in handy in the office. I use a dish strainer to store files I’m currently working on in a way that keeps them separate and accessible. Silverware trays can keep pens, pencils and makers together but apart in what could easily become a junk drawer. Mason jars make good containers for keeping tacks and fasteners from creeping out all over the place.

A pencil box or pouch can be a great purchase too. It’s exceptionally handy when it comes to collecting important scraps of paper. Save your receipts when you splurge on office supplies, it’s a tax write off for your home business. Resume paper and printing supplies can be deducted when tax time rolls around… my second favorite time of the year.
