How About Some Good News for a Change?

The job market in 2018 is vastly different than it was a few decades ago when Baby Boomers and Generation Xers were more likely to obtain job security and a great retirement package. It sometimes seems like these perks are a thing of the past, but there is good news for professionals who are fresh out of college and seeking a professional career. Here are some perks for modern job seekers.

1. Higher Salaries

As of August 2018, unemployment is low, according to U.S. News and World Report. This is good news for job seekers. To attract and retain top talent, employers aren't hesitant to offer higher salaries. As many as 71 percent of human resources managers are ready to offer higher starting salaries to entry-level employees. Existing employees can expect to receive regular salary increases as well. This certainly wasn't the norm a few decades ago.

2. Ditching the Suits and Ties

In the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, professional attire in the workplace was expected. Casual Fridays started to become popular in the late 90s, but many professionals were still expected to wear suits, ties, jackets and other professional attire to work. The corporate dress code has certainly relaxed in the past decade. Business casual attire, such as slacks with a collared shirt and even clean, neat-looking jeans, are acceptable in many workplaces. Wearing a suit and tie is still expected for job interviews, but the good news is that many companies have drastically relaxed their dress code to appeal to Millennials.

3. Flexible Work Schedule

The ability to negotiate a flexible work schedule is also good news. In the past, a boss provided the work schedule, and if an employee didn't adhere to it, he would lose his job. Negotiating was not an option. Advances in technology have made it easier than ever for workers to telecommute, which is why many employers are open to flex scheduling or allowing some employees to work from home a few days per week. Employers are also beginning to offer flexible schedules to brand new parents with infants at home and individuals who can't come to work due to an illness or injury.

4. Great Benefits Packages

Decades ago, benefits packages generally included medical coverage, dental coverage, retirement benefits and possibly a discount on products or services. Modern workers can gain these benefits and much more, which is good news. Childcare assistance, club memberships, paid time off, performance bonuses, student loan repayment and career development opportunities are just some of the perks that many workers can expect. Employees can also negotiate specific benefits that only they can receive, such as a specific office, new computer equipment or unlimited access to company products.

As a modern job seeker, you might not have the promise of true job security, but you can obtain many fantastic benefits that weren't available to your parents or grandparents, and that's good news. What are some other perks available to modern employees?

Thanks for the comments. @Carolyn S sounds like you have been out of the job market for awhile. Yes things have changed. Everything is done online now. And, in spite of the news from the White House that there are more jobs than there are job seekers, it's still a tough market out there. But not impossible. Regardless of your age. First thing would be to clean up your resume. Try to only include the past 10 yrs. Take dates off of everything that you can. Make sure that you are not including any obsolete skills or software knowledge. For each position, make sure that you are including between 3-6 bullet points and try to include as many results-oriented tasks as possible - measurable and quantifiable results. Cut your resume down to one page if possible. Don't include a photo on your resume. When you are applying for a position, be sure to include key words from the job posting in your resume. Sounds like a lot but it's not really. Take a look at some of the other articles we have posted on our network. Lots of good information in there to help you along. All the best.

I never thought I would be looking for employment at this age and I am finding a brand new market that I may not make it in.
