How to Deal with a Horrible Boss

Posted by in Career Advice

Maybe it's because the new movie "Horrible Bosses" recently opened, but I've been seeing many articles detailing how to deal with a difficult boss. If you've ever encountered difficulty with a manager, it's important to stay positive and focus on your job.

When that becomes impossible, your daily existence at work grows to be unbearable. It can be hard to focus. I've located a few good resources to help you cope if you're in the situation. Overall, it's good to be prepared because at some point in your career you will encounter someone who is difficult.

This article is great because it focuses on solutions, instead of dwelling on the problem. When dealing with a difficult supervisor, try to see both sides of the situation. Does your boss become frustrated because you aren't understanding a concept or you've inadvertently missed a deadline? Though it's normal to expect a superior to act in a mature manner, understand when you're contributing to the problem - and find a solution.

I also like how the article gives a simple list of do's and don'ts. In my experience, when dealing with a difficult manager it is important to document everything and not show a bias. Remember - you are a professional and as someone who is new to the work culture, try and rise above the fray. Trust me when I say that sometimes this is a difficult task, but you will thank yourself for being the bigger person.
