The MITRE Corporation's Electronic Systems Innovation Center is seeking a Principal Microelectronics and Hardware Security Engineer to lead technical efforts surrounding microelectronics trust and assurance, secure design, and anti-tamper. This position will work across MITRE, its sponsors, academia, and industry to shape and develop highly impactful security solutions and prototypes. The position also includes fostering transition and wider adoption of solutions, beyond prototype development, to make broad impacts in this space. Candidates should have strong technical backgrounds and research experience in this topic space as well as effective communication and interpersonal skills.
This position provides an exciting opportunity to shape the trajectory of the US Government's technical approach to microelectronics supply chain risk mitigation through innovation, partnership, advisory, and applied research. Specific responsibilities include:
Work with MITRE leadership to help set a vision and associated strategy for MITRE's role in microelectronics security specifically for application in supply chain security, IP protection, and securing USG systems
Lead and coordinate research and direct work in microelectronics and embedded systems security
Engage with a diverse set of stakeholders and researchers from academia, industry, and Government to identify and abstract underlying problems, connecting them with capabilities and technologies that can measurably reduce national security and economic risks surrounding microelectronics systems
Plan and maintain supporting capabilities (lab equipment and related infrastructure) in alignment with current and future research and work program needs
Participate in talent acquisition and staff development to help build out a world-class team of experts in this space
Basic Qualifications :
BS and 10 years of related experience, including 2 years of leadership experience
Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or applicants who are eligible for security clearances.
Ability to obtain DoD Secret Clearance
B.S. (or higher) in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field and 10+ years of related experience
Expertise and practical experience in microelectronics-based attacks and countermeasures including invasive, semi-invasive, and non-invasive techniques
Strong understanding of vulnerabilities throughout the microelectronics lifecycle and supply chain
Practical experience with hardware reverse engineering & vulnerability discovery, spanning from microelectronics to system-level
Understanding of cryptography and information security concepts
Experience in microelectronics and embedded system security architectures
Experience leading teams developing or evaluating secure embedded systems Willingness/passion for mentoring and developing junior engineers
M.S. or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field
Familiarity with secure US government or commercial systems
Ability to work with customers to understand their use cases and formulate a path forward, requires excellent oral and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to build consensus and partnerships across industry, academia, and customers to advance state of the art in microelectronics trust and assurance
Expertise in hardware security primitives such as cryptographic engines, secure processors, physically unclonable functions (PUFs), inline memory encryption
Experience with secure design for commercial programmable SoCs and FPGAs
Expertise in implementation and tool flows for ASIC and FPGA development efforts
Experience with common IC manufacturability design practices such as design-for-test & design-for-manufacturability
Experience in Anti-Tamper and countermeasure development
Experience with identifying critical research lab investments for embedded security
