'Tis The Season of Seasonal Work

Posted by in Career Advice

A look at holiday jobs.

Every year, companies hire additional employees to help them handle the holiday rush. When you are out of work and looking for a job, these temporary jobs can be a real blessing. Although some people have used their temporary holiday position as a way to get a full-time job offer, most seasonal jobs are strictly temporary.

For many companies, adding seasonal staff as opposed to hiring on additional full-time employees works out to be a better financial move. However, finding the right employees and training them isn't exactly free either.

Here is an infographic that takes a look at what types of jobs are most common for seasonal workers and how companies use their holiday help.

As you can see, holiday sales account for 25%-40% of annual sales for many retailers and it makes up 19% of all retail sales. Retailers in America will add an additional 480,000 to 500,000 temporary workers.

It's interesting to take a look at the graph that shows seasonal hiring history. In 2008 and 2009 there weren't many holiday jobs. This year, like last year, the number is getting higher. It certainly makes it easy to see how the economy is recovering.

What do you think about the infographic? Do you have a seasonal job? Let me know in the comments.
