3-D Smartphones—No Glasses Needed

Just when you thought you'd seen everything in 3-D comes 3-D Smartphones. Intel and Nokia—in collaboration with the University of Oulu in Finland--have teamed up to bring interactive 3-D environments to mobile phones.

Propelled by the growth in broadband and the rise in location-based applications for cell phones, the potential for mobile apps that let users collaborate in virtual environments has never been greater. Multi-user 3-D games, virtual business meetings, even professional 3-D training programs are all just around the corner. The goal is to give users an entirely new type of interface, adding space and perspective to the visual experience.

That 3-D experience could be similar to Second Life, which provides a 3-D environment on a two-dimensional display. One could also achieve similar results using a type of autostereoscopic system, which sends a different image to each eye, creating a 3-D scene. Systems like these have a very narrow viewing angle—too narrow for big-screen TVs--but well suited for the smaller screens on mobile phones. In the not-so-distant future, the concept of realism could be extended to enable phones to project a 3-D hologram of a caller.

Sharp's new Smartphone--said to arrive before New Year's Day 2011--will boast an autostereoscopic screen and 3-D camera. The good thing about this 3-D is that it works without those annoying 3-D glasses you need in movie theaters.

As a gadget junkie, I can't wait to get my hands on one of these 3-D phones. Check out James Cameron's Video as he discusses this exciting new breakthrough.
