3 Reasons Why You Can't Get a Job

If you can't understand why you never seem to get the job even after a "good" job interview, it might be time to take a closer look at your interview skills. For many people, there are three simple reasons why they are consistently overlooked after a job interview. Fortunately, these are all easily remedied. See if you find yourself making these mistakes, and use the interview tips provided to help get that job.

You Aren't Prepared

If you wander into a job interview completely clueless about the company, position or industry in general, you will probably be passed over for the job. Most employers want to know you want the job badly enough to do your own homework, at least enough to find out a bit about the company basics. Put yourself in the company's shoes — how can you possibly know how to help a company if you haven't got a clue about what it does?

Take the time to do some basic research about the business and job position you're applying for. You may not get asked about it, but if you do, you will be prepared to answer questions like a pro.

Your Telephone Interview Skills Are Weak

Just because your job interview isn't face to face doesn't mean you can relax about your interviewing skills. You must be confident and prepared in a telephone job interview just as you would at an in-person interview.

It may sound cheesy, but it can really boost your confidence if you smile while talking on the telephone. It's also a good idea to keep notes on hand, so you can refer to any questions you'd like to ask the interviewer as well as any pertinent information about the company and the job itself. Preparation and confidence will ensure you have a good telephone interview, improving your chances of landing the job.

You Lack Proper Speaking Skills

Communication is more than just being able to get your point across — you must be able to communicate in a professional, friendly manner in order to impress at a job interview. Skip the slang, remember to speak clearly and enunciate every word, and try to avoid using filler phrases such as "um" and "like."

Don't be tempted to "over speak" during your interview unless you are confident about the meaning of the words you choose to use.

Not every job interview will go as smoothly as you hope, but if you remember these interview tips, your future interviews should be more successful. Take a close look at yourself at your last interview to see if any of these issues apply to you, and make the simple changes necessary to get the job you want.
