4 Tips to Keep Facebook Fun and Find a Job

Posted by in Career Advice

Whether you are a potential or professional realtor you have to put your best face forward to get the job or land the client. Don’t let your social media status stand in the way of your success.

Put these helpful hints into practice to save face and still have fun on Facebook.

  1. Start Fresh – Back up your Facebook by going to Account Settings and click and follow the instructions under “Download a copy of your Facebook data” (at the bottom of the list). Doing this will email you a copy of your notes, images, videos, status updates etc. and allow you to lock everything down so you can go back and decide who gets access to what info.
  2. Make a List, Check it Twice – Not everyone needs to know ALL of your business so sort out who hears what by making lists. Base them on how you know people like work, friends, family, best buds and so on. Also make lists that separate people by interests for example politics, religion, music, sports and that sort of stuff. If your potential employer isn’t on the list they won’t know which presidential candidate you support unless you have a big bumper sticker on your car.
  3. Follow the Rules – Please practice common sense. I shouldn’t have to say it but I will. Don’t post naked or incriminating pictures. Don’t describe illicit or illegal activity even if you think you’re being subtle. Definitely don’t be hateful racist or violent no matter who you think you’re allowing or blocking from seeing your status. Stuff like that has a way of slipping out and when it does it’s an instant career killer. Just ask Gilbert Gottfried.
  4. Play the Games – Remember what they say about all work and no play? Don’t be dull, go ahead and get gaming. Find one or two social games on Facebook that potential colleagues are playing and ask them to add you to their network of online neighbors. Establish an alliance by bonding over the game board and they will feel comfortable standing up for you in real life especially after you’ve demonstrated how you play the game. It’s important to remember you don’t want to be a sore winner or a sore loser. Also avoid logging on during work hours or you will be so busted.

There’s no need to sacrifice your fun at the expense of your job search or your job search at the expense of your fun. Be smart and you can have the best of both worlds.
