4 Ways to Use ChatGPT In Your Job Search

Posted by in Career Advice

ChatGPT revolutionized the world of search in just a few months. People use ChatGPT to create content, write code, complete their homework, translate text, and even tell jokes—among many other activities.

The AI chatbot can even assist with your job search. By serving as your cover letter editor, interview prep buddy, personal career advisor, and networking assistant, ChatGPT can make your job search easier and more successful.

1. Use ChatGPT to write/edit resumes and cover letters

Tailoring your resume and cover letter for every application is tedious yet very important. To streamline this process, ChatGPT can synthesize your information into a quality resume or cover letter in an instant. Simply paste the job description and your resume into ChatGPT and instruct it to write a cover letter. Make your prompt as specific as possible and add any notes, such as the tone you’d like to use or a point you’d like to highlight.

For a resume, you may want ChatGPT to write pieces, which you can then paste into a properly formatted resume later. Or you can have it design a resume outline for you.

But, if you’d rather write your application on your own, you can still use ChatGPT as an editor.

ChatGPT’s editing capabilities go far beyond finding typos and grammatical errors. Ask ChatGPT to give you specific feedback on your writing, such as suggestions to enhance readability, improve the formatting, or even re-work sections to better articulate what you’re trying to say.

However, if you use ChatGPT for writing, make sure to edit the text yourself. Some people are quite adept at detecting AI writing, and hiring teams may use AI detecting programs to flag applications written by ChatGPT. And while ChatGPT can mimic a specific tone or style, you’ll want to add your own personal flair into your application anyway.

2. Use ChatGPT to prepare for interviews

Gone are the days of bothering your friends to do mock interviews with you. Now, ChatGPT can prepare you for job interviews in a variety of ways, such as by compiling a list of common interview questions, brainstorming questions for you to ask the interviewer, roleplaying a practice job interview, and researching the employer

For example, if you are unsure where to start in your interview prep, you can prompt ChatGPT to suggest common questions. You can even ask for industry-specific questions or questions commonly asked by the company you’re interviewing with.

However, identifying which questions to practice is only one part of your homework. Next, you must prepare your answers to those questions.

ChatGPT can help by hosting a virtual mock interview with you. Have the chatbot ask you questions, submit your answer, and then let it respond as an interviewer would. By the time you enter a real interview, the process will feel familiar and you’ll know exactly what to say.

Additionally, if you want to brush up on your interview etiquette, learn to stay calm under pressure, or get interview tips for a specific company, ChatGPT has the answers.

3. Use ChatGPT for career guidance and research

ChatGPT can help you change careers, find new opportunities, or kickstart a stalled job search by identifying realistic alternatives to the job title you have/are looking for.

Here, ChatGPT excels over traditional search engines because it can tailor its responses to your specific skills, experiences, and interests. This streamlines your research by filtering out most of the unsuitable and undesirable jobs automatically.

It can even help you tap into the “hidden job market” to find open positions. The hidden job market refers to job openings that are not posted publicly, which includes as many as 50-70% of available jobs.

To mine job openings with ChatGPT, first identify your target company. Prompt ChatGPT to identify potential, relevant openings at that company. Then send the company a pitch asking them to consider you for one of those positions.

4. Use ChatGPT to network

Some experts consider networking the most important factor in your job search. Networking can reduce your search by 1-3 months and increase the quality of the offers you receive. And ChatGPT facilitates networking by identifying big names in your industry and crafting outreach emails for you.

Use ChatGPT to identify companies, experts, thought leaders, and influencers in your industry. If you submit your online profile to ChatGPT, it can tailor these recommendations to your goals and interests.

Once you have located networking opportunities, you can prompt ChatGPT to craft an outreach message to them. And to make the message extra personal, simple paste their online profile into ChatGPT or provide as much information on them as you can.

Or, if you wrote the email yourself, use ChatGPT to edit and optimize it.

ChatGPT is also a great source of networking advice. Use it to locate industry events and research new ways of connecting with professionals in your field. ChatGPT’s power as a job search assistant doesn’t stop there. ChatGPT can identify salary ranges, research your industry, and make sense of technical, jargon-heavy, or confusing job descriptions. Just remember to fact check its information and edit any writing it gives you for the best results. Also, know that ChatGPT’s responses are generated based on the information it’s been trained on up until September 2021.
