One of the complaints from many job seekers and those who are working is that they seem to be stuck in a job and can not advance. I would like to offer six tips that might help you advance in your career.

Boss Talk - If you do not see any automatic advancement coming your way, feel free to have a sit down with your boss and inquire directly as to your future in the company. Focus on how you wish to make sure that your performance is always within or above expectations and requirements needed to meet the company goals. Ask for ways to be of better service to the company. Let them know of your long term goals and ask for any suggestions on how you might achieve those goals. Your boss should admire and respect your diligence in this type of move and you may find answers you are looking for to assist your advancement.

Do More - If you are available to take on a bit more of a work load, do so. Volunteer to assist other departments within your section. Take the initiative to ask for additional work, and find ways to increase your worth to the company. Taking your job seriously, doing the work, going the extra mile, are ways to a quicker advancement; punching the clock and doing your time only, is not.

Innovation - Look for ways to use your skills to solve problems in a different fashion that will ultimately make your section, your boss and even you, look better. Speak up, give input and suggestions and be a voice of reason and problem solving; do not just sit back and leave it to others to handle. Those "others" are the ones who will receive the advancements.

Mentoring - If possible, approach someone in a higher up position, a position you would like to one day attain, and see if they would be willing to spend a little time mentoring you. Express to them your desires to work to advance into a position such as theirs, and that you would like to learn from them the best way to be prepared for such a move down the line. Developing interpersonal skills and making connections with others is a great way to start on the road to advancement. Be friendly and communicate with others as you never know what doors it might open.

Educate Yourself - Always stay on top of the latest developments in your career and apply that new aquired knowledge. Never stop learning and always find ways to implement time saving and cost cutting solutions whenever possible. New and advancing skills are a sign of someone desiring advancement.

Switching Jobs - If you are sitting in your job and there is no real advancement opportunities present, or you just feel you need a change or better challenge, it is best to look for a job while you are already employed. Obviously the stress of finding a new job in such a situation is not as much pressure and that allows you to be a bit more picky as to what you are looking for and how you go about finding it.

Do you have any other tips that would help others? I would love to hear them in the comments.
