Bright-Side to Benefits That Aren't Medical

Posted by in Retail

It can be tough enough to find a retail job in the current economy. Finding one with benefits may seem to require a miracle. Don’t be so down though. Take a spoon full of sugar to induce a moment of opulent optimism and look at your options through rose colored glasses. You might find some subtle benefits you didn’t see before that can add up to the equivalent of on the job insurance.

How’s the employee discount?
In my experience I always tried to work somewhere I could catch a break on expenses I was already shelling out at the time. In my younger years it was movie theaters and shops that sold cool clothes or independent music. As I’m older I find large retailers like Wal-Mart and Target can reduce my grocery bill and save oodles on necessities like toilet paper. Each month’s savings practically equate to an automatic pay raise.

Teamwork that works
Coworker cohesion is a hot commodity. It’s been found that no job can be better for you than a bad job. Career stress can wreak havoc on both health and happiness at work and at home. Your job can save or strain your relationships so when you find a group of people you work well with you might realize a blissful work environment is a bigger benefit than group dental.

A minute commute
A short commute can add up quick;y on the benefit scale. When calculating your hours and wages, include time spent on the road to know what you’re really making. Then consider maintenance, gas mileage, and insurance to know how much you’re spending verses saving just to get to work. If it looks like you’ll be spending a large portion of your pay check on transportation you might want to wait and accept the next offer. By applying to places where you can walk, bike or catch a bus to work, you can rack up the cost and environmental benefits all at once.

What do you think? Are you looking at all of the benefits of the job or just the salary? Let me know in the comments.
