Getting Hired at a Job Fair

Job fairs are a great resource for networking, learning about your desired job industry and finding out more about potential employers. Job seekers that put in the right amount of prep work and make a great impression may even stand the chance of getting hired at a job fair. Consider these tips for job fair success.

1. Customize Your Resume

Don't show up to a job fair with a carbon copy resume to hand out to potential employers. Do some research to find out which employers are expected to attend the job fair, and customize multiple resumes and cover letters to fit a few of the most desirable positions.

2. Follow Up

Don't just walk away after making a connection with a potential employer. Ask when you can expect to hear news about the position, and inquire about an acceptable time frame for making a follow-up call if you don't hear from the company.

3. Dress the Part

When attending a job fair, it's important to dress professionally to make a great first impression. A suit and tie are appropriate for men, and ladies should wear a suit jacket, a skirt or slacks, and low pumps. Even if most of the companies at the job fair have casual work atmospheres, you must present yourself extremely well since your appearance is the first thing potential employers notice.

4. Research the Positions

Before you head to the job fair, research the companies attending the job fair and the positions for which they're hiring. Read over the skills and qualifications required for the available jobs before deciding which companies you want to visit. At the job fair, prepare to discuss details about the job you want. Avoid wasting time talking to representatives from companies that are not in your industry.

5. Be Patient

You aren't the only job seeker attending the job fair, so expect to stand in line. Be patient as you wait to speak to a company representative, and make sure you look alert and positive instead of bored or agitated. While waiting, network with other job seekers and discuss trends in your industry.

6. Prepare Your Pitch

Have a 45-second pitch prepared that introduces you to company representatives and explains your skills and qualifications. Practice this script before heading to the job fair, and express it with confidence.

Follow these tips to increase your chance of getting hired at a job fair. Customize a cover letter and resume for the positions you really want, and be assertive when planning a follow-up strategy. Dress well, plan a strategy ahead of time and research the background of the companies on your wish list. Expect to spend time standing in line, and have an introductory pitch prepared.
