How ‘Wormholes’ Are Creating a New Trend in Communication Jobs

Posted by in Technology

There is a new use for the word “wormhole.” The world of 24 hour, high definition video is using this word to describe what it does for businesses. When done properly it is like having a window in your office that is connected to another office room. The interesting thing about this other room is that its inhabitants are thousands of miles away and three time zones apart. This spells new opportunities for people looking for communication jobs. If you are one of them, the high definition communication train is getting ready to leave the station.

According to Matthew Gryczan of Crain’s Detroit Business, “Weary business travelers who log thousands of frequent-flier miles and long stays in airport terminals have awaited practical telepresence for years, and it appears to have arrived. In a recent report, the Campbell, Calif., consulting firm Infonetics Research estimated that sales of enterprise videoconferencing and telepresence systems amounted to about $2.2 billion worldwide last year, an 18 percent increase over the previous year. Infonetics expects that to reach $5 billion by 2015.”

He goes on to say that, “High definition video used for business communications is definitely a trend that is expanding. One of the advantages is its ability to provide real time, clear and consistent video communication. This kind of communication allows businesses that have branch offices or clients in other cities or countries to be able to connect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”

Not only does this type of service cut down the amount of time and inconvenience spent traveling from one city to the next, but it saves money. Gryczan adds that “Like many companies, Steelcase first examined how it could justify the cost of high-definition videoconferencing equipment by reducing its most expensive regular business trips. An analysis showed a likely return on investment from cutting trips between Grand Rapids and Steelcase's international headquarters in Strasbourg, France.”

Where there is money to be made, opportunity for communication jobs soon follows. Cellular News reported that, “ HDMI technology developer and founder Silicon Image this month announced plans to acquire SiBeam, one of the leaders in the emerging market for wireless connectivity for HD video. Sibeam is a fabless semiconductor company that is focused on bringing very high-speed wireless communications technologies to the consumer electronics space-technologies that can approach the performance of wired connections such as HDMI.”

Cellular news added, “Shipments of products that could use SiBeam's wireless Video technology are expected to rise to 241.1 million units in 2015, up from just 6.6 million in 2010.These products range from consumer platforms to computers, to mobile devices, to media tablets. Some of the biggest product areas adopting wireless video in the coming years will include flat-panel TVs, notebook and netbook PCs, and mobile consumer electronics devices, such as portable media players, portable gaming devices, 3G/4G mobile communication handsets and HD camcorders.”

Communication workers looking to where their industry is headed need not look any further. The job opportunities that presently abound in high definition video communication will continue to grow. What is important for these people looking to be employed, or to advance their positions in the communication industry to realize is that they must upgrade their skills sets. Without the right skills, this high definition communication train will leave them behind.
