LG has agreed to participate in the Smart Watts project, which is being sponsored by the German government. LG is working with Germany's Kellendonk Elektronik to develop a decentralized, intelligent electricity network. LG wants to promote energy efficiency to all business groups and recently unveiled the world’s first solar powered air conditioner. This also marks the first time a South Korean company has agreed to participate in a European smart grid project. LG's solar-powered air conditioner, a 28,000 BTU unit with a 70-watt solar array, supplies only about 10 percent of the over 700 watts required for cooling. LG is working to increase the watts that come from solar energy over the next few years. The solar energy is currently supplying power to the filter and sir circulation system, so the only power that is being drained from the outlet is when the compressor is on. This is a big step towards a green electricity network.
