Would You Buy a MacBook Air for $799

Posted by in Technology

As far as I'm concerned, there's no computer that looks as attractive as the MacBook Air. It's slim lined, lightweight body makes it difficult to believe that there is a powerhouse inside of it. However, for me and many other people, owning a MacBook isn't a good financial decision. Apple products are great, but they also carry a price tag that makes other PCs and Android devices a better buy.

In fact, one of the things that has made Apple a success was their resistance to offering affordably priced options. The strategy has made their products into a sort of luxury computer and has turned them into status symbols.

In fact, this pricing strategy played a large part in Steve Jobs plan to bring Apple back from the brink. However, a recent report on Digitimes suggested that the company is preparing to offer a $799 MacBook Air.  This price would be $200 lower than their current entry-level product.

On the other hand, if Apple made the MacBook Air available at a cheaper price, it would undermine the sales of other ultrabooks and even Android tablets. If customers had the option of buying a cheaper tablet, a laptop, a slim lined Ultrabook or a MacBook Air, most would chose the Apple product.

However, I doubt that this rumor is true. Even though there is quite a lot of buzz about it, I don't see why Apple would slash the prices on the MacBook Air, when they haven't been having any trouble selling the product. In fact, the MacBook Air currently makes up 25 percent of Apple's notebook sales. In the past, they have always stood by their pricing plans and have adamantly refused to lower their prices and compete with other manufacturers. They have always been known for innovation and for creating the next big thing. As such, they haven't seen the need to compete on prices alone.

The only thing that makes me think that it might be true, is that they have done some price slashing on older models of iPhones, and the iPad. Maybe they will be selling last year's MacBook Air at a discount. If so, count me in.
