Dressing for Success: 4 Rules You Should Know

Posted by in Career Advice

It used to be that knowing what to wear to work was easy. If you worked at a factory, you typically wore a uniform. If you worked in a professional setting, a shirt and tie were standard. Today's workplace is different. There are some multi-million dollar companies who have CEOs that show up in ripped up jeans and t-shirts, while others adopt a business-casual atmosphere.

There has been a dramatic shift in the way that people dress for work in recent years and it can be hard to know how to dress.

Here are 4 rules that can help you solve this challenge:

Know the dress code and corporate culture - Before you go to your interview, do some research to find out more about the company's corporate culture and their dress code. For example, if you were applying to be a store manager for a company like Hot Topic, arriving in a suit and tie would probably give the wrong impression. If you can't find out any clear information, don't hesitate to call and ask the receptionist about the company's dress code and what people typically wear to work. Remember, it's your responsibility to find out this information.

It's about how you wear your clothes - By now, it should go without saying that in order to make the best impression, you have to look clean, tidy and well pulled together. Polish your shoes, make sure your shirt doesn't have stains and that your clothes fit well. It's more important to present an image of someone who cares about their appearance than it is to impress them with your fashion sense. Choose items that make you feel comfortable and professional.

Grooming is important - Have a nice haircut, make sure your nail polish isn't chipped. For men, don't have black stuff under your nails. Shave if you need to and make sure that you look clean and well-groomed.

Know the uniform - If the company has a uniform or a specific dress code, like red shirts and khakis, make sure you can recognize it. During an interview, you should be able to pick out the people who are employees. Also, be prepared to wear the uniform to work without complaint.

Are there other things that are important when deciding what to wear to your new job? Please share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments.
