Farmville Dollars Don't Pay The Rent - And Other Things I've Learned From Facebook

Here are 5 life lessons I have learned from Facebook.

Ah, social networking. Whether you use it to keep up with your friends and family or use it primarily to fuel your job search, you can't deny that it is a whole new world of connectivity.

I had a MySpace account back when it was new and I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Then my sisters joined, and that was even cooler. Then my big brother signed up, and I thought it couldn't get better. Next came the cousins and aunts and uncles. After that, I started getting friend requests from former classmates, old teachers and co-workers. Pretty soon, just about everyone I knew was on MySpace and I started to miss the anonymity of the internet before everyone was so connected. After awhile, I abandoned my MySpace account because I couldn't bear to see any more virtual glitter icons.

Now, we have all moved on to Facebook. Facebook is becoming the leader in social networking, and just about everyone you know has an account. So, to celebrate our connectedness, here are the top 5 things I have learned from Facebook.

  • Farmville dollars don't pay the rent – No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to find a way to make money while pursuing my addiction to silly online games. It seems like every time I say I am just going to check Facebook really quick, I end up spending at least an hour playing games. Facebook offers hundreds of games that users can play cooperatively with their friends. This means spam your friends mercilessly until they send you another watering can.

  • It is amazing what people will post on Facebook – Just about everyone has that friend that doesn't mind airing all of their dirty laundry right on their status update. What's worse is when they leave thinly veiled threats promising revenge for a slight, and you know who you are. This, of course, makes everyone they know post a comment to see if they are talking to them. Be very careful what you post on Facebook, trust me, it will come back to haunt you.

  • By posting on a friend's wall, you can build your friendship without actually having to do friend stuff – Do you have that annoying family member who you want to be friends with but don't want to actually hang out with them? No worries, just post on their wall and comment on a few pictures and you're in the clear.

  • Just because it is on Facebook, doesn't mean it isn't a scam – Facebook has provided a new platform for the less computer savvy to pass along chain letters and buy into scams. What's worse, some of these “harmless” applications like IQ tests actually take your personal information and use it to market their products to others.

  • There is power in numbers – Take a look at the companies that have made it their business by offering group discounts. Groupon, Facebook Deals and even special offers for people who “like” a company's Facebook page have changed the way that customers interact with businesses.

Whether you love it or hate it, Facebook has become part of our culture. What things have you learned from Facebook? Let me know in the comments.
