First Impressions

Posted by in Career Advice

I read an interesting blog today about "How to Make a Killer First Impression." This is a topic that I think is important both in life and in the job search. I've written a few articles in the past on this subject so you should check them out if you haven't already. (Beauty matters, trust me; The Beauty Issue Continued)

Those previous articles talked more about research and studies that prove that more attractive people get hired over people who are not as attractive. The article I read today was less about beauty and more about making a lasting impression. This is gold to employers. They have to sift through tons of job applications, resumes, and conduct various interviews. So it is useful to stand out from the crowd. While qualifications are always more important, it is definitely worthwhile to make yourself a person that is hard to forget.

Many of the tips listed were very good. Here are a few:

  • Set a goal
  • Choose accessories wisely
  • Stay conscious of body language
  • Don't let on that you are having a "bad day"
  • Engage with people

One that was left out was facial expressions. I'm a person that has a very expressive face. Not only that but often I don't even realize that I'm frowning or smiling or scowling. Perhaps I hear something that disgusts me. Well, even though I don't say that it does, you can tell it does from my facial expression. This is something to watch when on job interviews or when networking.

These people are strangers and so take bodily cues to gather information from you. This is what we all do. As the article states, it usually only takes a tenth of a second. So it matters immediately.

Wev'e all heard that it's best to dress conservatively (depending on the type of job), smile, ask interesting questions, sit up straight, etc. These are the interviewing basics we've read about repeatedly. I would just add the above as the icing on the cake.

Sometimes it appears counterintuitive take tips like these seriously since most companies require online applications before (or if) they agree to see you. So, of course, making sure you look good on paper is just as important. However, the inevitable in-person encounter will happen one day. So be prepared.

An interesting tip the article provides is to dress up in what you think is your "best" outfit and "game face" and practice in front of a friend who will really tell you the truth. I know I have worn something I thought looked superb to have my husband tell me to take it off immediately! So, like we all know, first impressions matter and are important. It may be what stands between you and the next great employment opportunity.

What are some dos and don'ts when it comes to interviews? What are your favorite things to wear or talk about when networking?
