High-visibility manufacturing plants are those that receive a lot of attention. Perhaps they have added jobs or tend to be the front-runners in their industries. These companies usually have excellent marketing plans or find themselves in the headlines for their innovation and ability to attract the highest talent. Many top multinational manufacturing plants do most of their manufacturing in the US, and they continually make their mark.

An American Multinational company, Apple, is one of the top manufacturing plants that specializes in consumer electronics, software, and personal computers. It offers a line of well-known top-selling products, including the iPhone, the Mac line of computers, the iPod, and iTunes media. The company was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne in April 1976, and it is currently the second-largest technology company and the third-largest phone manufacturer. The company continues to make headlines, with its newest phone—the iPhone 6—starting production in the second quarter of 2014. Yearly sales are close to $200 billion, and it employs close to 100,000 people.

The Ford Motor Company is a multination company that has its manufacturing plant headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. Founded in 1903 by Henry Ford, the company is the second-largest automaker in the US and the fifth-largest carmaker in the world. The Ford F-150 is the top-selling truck in America, and the majority of its cars are manufactured in the US. The company employees close to 15 percent of the American workforce, and it sold close to 2.5 million vehicles in 2013. Bouncing back after the recession, the company was granted pay reductions to entry-level employees, but in return, Ford has added 5,500 jobs in manufacturing plants the US.

General Electric (GE) is another of the US manufacturing plants that is highly visible. In 2013, the company added 10,000 jobs and launched the production of appliances at a new plant in Louisville, Kentucky. The company also announced its plans to invest approximately $600 billion to expand its aviation business. When looking at manufacturing in the US, GE is one of the top companies because it produces a wide variety of products, including power-generation turbines, locomotives, and engines. The company has also been exploring additive manufacturing or 3-D printing, which is the process of making a three-dimensional solid out of any shape from a digital model.

High-visibility manufacturing plants are those whose names are at the top of the list when we think of American-made products and the creation of jobs. While there are many of these companies in the US, some clearly stand out. Others that can be included on the list of top manufacturing plants include Caterpillar, Terex, Yamaha, General Motors, and Coleman.
