Age-related stereotypes often result in preconceived notions or unfair treatment in the workplace, but there are things workers can do to combat these biases.

Older workers are often stereotyped as having low energy, lacking technological skills and being adverse to learning new things. As an older worker, fight these stereotypes by seeking out training that keeps you current with new market trends and technologies, and being open to new ways of thinking.

Younger workers are frequently pegged as being unreliable and easily distracted, acting entitled and constantly seeking praise. As a younger worker, combat these stereotypes by showing your enthusiasm and motivation, and working with colleagues as a team.

At any age, employees can fight age bias by displaying a positive attitude and presenting a professional image. By keeping job skills current, employees of any generation appear more relevant and fresh. Employees should network with others in their industry and invest in education relevant to their career field.

Employees who continue to feel discriminated against based on their age should keep a logbook to record any instances construed as age bias. Keep any emails, letters, memos or other documents on file in case they are needed for a lawsuit in the future.

Employees or job seekers over the age of 40 who are discriminated against based on age can file a lawsuit under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967. A lawsuit may be filed in the case of layoffs, terminations, overlooked promotions or missed job opportunities that are proven to be a result of age discrimination.
