How To Stay Current With Your Industry and Network- When You're Flat Broke

Posted by in Career Advice

There is no argument that attending seminars, conferences and other industry events are they best ways to network with other professionals, keep your job skills current and get energized about your career search. But, if you are have been out of work for awhile and struggling to pay the bills, odds are good that you just can't afford to attend any of them.

So how do you stay current with your industry and network when you're flat broke?

Here are some ways to help:

  • Find transcripts of the event – Most industry conferences come with an expensive resgistration fee, because typically employers send their staff and pick up the bill. If you can't afford to attend the event, don't sweat it. Almost always, the speakers will be filmed and the video will be available on their website. With just a quick Google search a few days after the event, you can find and watch all of the presentations at home for free.

  • Offer your services – Many conferences and career events offer presentations from various local companies and organizations. Contact the people who are putting on the event and ask them if they need volunteers to set up, help check people in or help cleaning up after the event in exchange for admission. If they aren't able to accept your help, take a look at the organizations that are presenting. Odds are good that there will be a few non-profits on the list. Call them and explain your situation and offer to volunteer at the event with them. With most non-profits being understaffed for these types of event, they will most likely take you up on your offer.

  • Join groups on Linkedin and participate in discussions – Linkedin is a wonderful resource for both networking and keeping up with your industry. Join a variety of groups and participate in the discussions. Don't be afraid to ask questions and get to know the other professionals in the groups.

  • Start an industry related blog – Starting your own blog is easier than ever these days, so don't let a lack of web designing skills stop you. Once you have a blog up and running, you can contact industry leaders and other people you admire and ask them if you can interview them for your blog. If they have the time, they will probably be willing to meet with you. Make sure you bring a list of great questions with you and thank them for their time. This way, you can learn more and your readers will reap the benefits.

  • Visit your local library – The public library system is a great resource for finding books and other publications that can help you fine tune your skills. Library cards are free so there is no excuse not to take advantage of them.

Don't let finances keep you from building your professional network and keeping current in your industry. With a little bit of determination, you can find ways to work around these obstacles.
