How to Stay Productive on the Job Hunt

Posted by in Career Advice

It is trying times for those who find themselves out of work. A lackluster job market and dead-end opportunities don't help the situation. It can be hard to stay productive while looking for employment without becoming discouraged, but it's important in order to return to the working world a rejuvenated, smarter and more efficient employee.

One of the most effective ways to stay productive while unemployed is to stick to the same schedule you had when you were employed. While it can be tempting to want to lounge in bed watching TV all day in your pajamas, it's important to adhere to a structured schedule to train your brain to stay productive and alert. Set your alarm to go off in the morning, and get out of bed, take a shower, and get dressed for the day. More importantly, make a to-do list of your daily goals, such as sending your resume to at least three companies or calling at least one colleague or friend. Staying productive all day, sticking to your list and marking tasks off as you complete them will give you a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Another effective way to stay productive is to further your education. This doesn't have to mean enrolling in a formal college or university; self-education is an effective and cost-friendly tool. Check out your local library for books pertaining to your industry, or subscribe to industry blogs and newsletters to stay abreast of news relevant to you. The education doesn't have to stop there: try learning a new language or software program. Look for local classes and seminars; not only is this good for expanding your mind, you may also open up new networking opportunities.

This leads to one of the most crucial ways for you to stay productive on the job hunt: step away from the computer and get out of the house! Today's digital world means most aspects of the job hunt are online, from submitting resumes to conducting interviews. But staring at a computer screen all day in hopes of scoring a new gig can suck the life out of you. Balance your online job search with real-world networking: attend events related to your industry, call and meet old colleagues or classmates for coffee, or volunteer your time for a charity. Any of these activities can help clear your mind, keep you connected to the outside world, help you stay productive and focused, and provide new opportunities to get connected to a great position.

In this difficult job market, keep in mind that there are many others in your same situation. Unemployment won't last forever; keeping yourself active and engaged is important to be able to spring back into the working world. Keeping a structured schedule, educating yourself and networking offline all are great ways to stay productive and make the journey to your next position a little smoother.

Very timely and accurate account of some "next steps". It goes hand in hand with staying consistent with all of your efforts.

I have been doing this. My next step is going outside more since the computer is giving me headaches while sending my resume out everyday. I don't think it's impossible to find a job it's just being patient and not expecting things right away.
