How Volunteerism Can Lead to Your Next Business Job

Posted by in Career Advice

There is a story about a man who was lost in the woods on a cold and windy day. He wandered around for hours and finally stumbled across an old abandoned cottage. Once inside this run down structure, he desperately looked for some way to warm his chilled body. As he studied his surroundings, his eyes focused in on a fireplace in the main room. He walked over to the hearth and shouted the words, “fireplace give me some heat, and then I’ll give you the wood.” Well of course, nothing happened. He just stood there just as cold as ever. You see, he was violating a basic law of physics. In order for him to receive heat, he was going to have to gather some wood and ignite a flame and build a fire in the cold, dark hearth.

Like building a fire, you must take some action to generate possible leads to your next business job. If you want to meet a corporate connection that could lead to your next career opportunity, volunteering could be one way to do it. What I am talking about is giving yourself the opportunity to circulate with other business people in a non-aggressive manner that will allow you to build a relationship. Once that takes place, it could open the door to employment in the company of your choice. In other words, donating your time to a worthy cause or causes just might be the way to help you meet the right people who are gainfully employed, and are also donating their time to a cause they believe in.

Volunteering is a very effective way to mingle with and get to know other business people, who very likely, are connected to others within their organization who do the hiring for new or vacated positions.

One excellent reason for volunteering is that it gives other people a chance to get to know who you are. They are able to observe your commitment to a worthy cause and your work ethic.

Quite likely, if what you have chosen to volunteer for is in line with your true values, others with similar values who are volunteering for this project, have the opportunity to observe your personality, attitude and work habits. What better way is there to judge if a person could fit into their work culture?

Some of the community activities that are looking for volunteers include your university alumni association, your local humane society, chamber of commerce, municipal zoo, soup kitchen, and many, many others. For a list of volunteer opportunities in your community visit
www.1-800-volunteer.org. Here you will be connected to a wide variety of organizations that can help you serve your community and meet other professionals who are striving to make a difference in their community.

When all is said and done, you won’t find yourself rubbing your hands in front of a cold, dark fireplace, but rather you will be basking in the warmth of the open flames of job opportunities..
