Is Social Networking Really Necessary?

Posted by in Career Advice

One of the questions that many job seekers ask is, “I don't like social networking. Is my job search doomed?” It's a fair question but the answer isn't a simple “yes” or “no.” Of course your entire job search isn't going to be derailed by a lack of social networking, but being connected with others can really help you find the right job at the right time. Without a strong professional and personal network, it's likely that your search will take longer and you might miss out on a great opportunity.

Finding the right job isn't easy. Many people say that it's not what you know that matters, it's who you know, and when it comes to looking for a job, that's certainly true. Being in the right place at the right time is often how people find the job of their dreams. Even though it sounds like it's just a matter of them being luckier than you, putting themselves in that right place wasn't luck – it was effective networking.

If you just don't like social media, you can still build a strong network. Just because you aren't comfortable with Twitter and Facebook doesn't mean that you can't participate in other types of job networking. Here are a couple of examples:

  • You can create a profile and participate in discussions like the ones we offer at Nexxt.

  • You can start an industry-specific blog or read and comment on other blogs and websites.

  • You can attend job fairs, networking events or industry related functions.

Another way to build a strong network is to work on it while you already have a job. Building strong relationships with others in your field is something you should be doing throughout your entire career, not just when you're looking for a job. Here are some things you should already be doing:

  • Build lasting friendships with co-workers and colleagues.

  • Join and participate in trade organizations.

  • Stay in contact with friends and past co-workers, bosses and other professionals.

  • Find people you admire and get to know them. They should be able to give you great advice and help you through difficult times in your career.

  • Ask your friends if there is anyone they can introduce you to. It's amazing how many interesting people you can meet this way.

  • Know who you are and have defined career goals. Knowing where you want to go will help you get there.

Having a strong network will make your job search and your entire career progress easier. Take a chance, get out of your comfort zone and find a way to reach out to your group of friends and contacts. You'll be surprised to find that they can hold the key to reaching your next career goals.
