Keeping The Boss Smiling

Posted by in Career Advice

One of the ways to make your job easier is to keep your boss smiling and happy. Even in Customer Service, keeping your boss happy makes the job better for you. What are some of the ways to accomplish this without looking like a brown-noser? Here’s a few suggestions.

*Keep focused on your work: By being dedicated and doing a good job, you’re being efficient and productive. Do things right the first time and be willing to improve whenever it applies. The work you do for your employer is a product they pay you for. Make a habit to deliver strong outcomes consistently. Be flexible and available at short notice for emergency situations so they know they can count on you.

*Treat customers well goes without saying: It’s a big part of every kind of business. When you treat customers well, they give you return business. Sometimes the most difficult customer can become your best customer. Making customers happy, makes your boss’s job easier.

*Keep your breaks short and only take off when you’re actually sick: This is very important. If your lunch break is an hour long, then only take an hour, better yet, come back five minutes early. If you’re consistently late, it upsets your co-workers. They will then complain to the higher ups. You don’t want that kind of negative attention brought to you. Only take sick leave when you’re actually sick. A doctor’s excuse is always a good thing to have when you come back. Pretending to be sick because you just don’t feel like going in that day can backfire on you unexpectedly. Your boss will notice late lunches and an unacceptable amount of sick days.

*Get along with your co-workers: Treat everyone how you would like to be treated. As a professional, you’re supposed to be beyond backstabbing, gossip and petty quarrels. Work on improving your relationships with people at all levels. When you learn to cooperate with your co-workers regardless of departments, it makes your boss happy. Whining and complaining about having to work with a certain person or department does not.

*Arrive on time to work and never show up late for meetings: In addition to always being on time, make sure all tasks and projects are completed when due. Being on time for meetings and even a little early will show your boss that you're on the ball. Behave and dress professionally at all times. Dress as if you’re going to be sent out to meet a client every day. Keep your personal cell phone turned off while at work and at meetings. Don’t bring personal problems to work. Negative feelings become public very quickly; by keeping things positive, it reflects well on your boss to their higher ups.

Employees who focus on their work and rise to challenges are regarded more favorably. Remember if your boss is happy, it makes your day a whole lot easier!
