When it's time to head to any job interview, it's important to make sure your resume is impeccable, you choose references that are top-notch, and practice common questions until you're confident and well-prepared. In addition, you should spend some time thinking about your appearance. Here are some tips for men to help you look professional and polished at your next job interview.

Base the attire you choose for the job interview on the typical dress code at the company. If you're unsure, do some research on the employer to find out about the culture. For corporate offices, go with a more formal, professional wardrobe. For creative positions, a business casual outfit may be more suitable for the interview.

What to Wear: The Professional Interview

When you land a job interview in a professional office, opt for a two-piece suit in navy blue, charcoal grey or black. Make sure the suit is tailored to fit you perfectly, and wear a neatly ironed clean white shirt with a straight collar. Choose a tie in a classic shade with a traditional pattern, and go for clean, shiny leather Oxford shoes and dark socks that match your suit. Wear a top-quality watch, and consider adding cufflinks to your look. Pop in a pocket square that matches your tie, and carry a nice leather briefcase.

What to Wear: The Casual Interview

If you research the employer and discover the work environment is more casual, you can tone down your job interview attire and opt for a look that shows off your personal style. Choose a button-down shirt in a solid color or a classic pattern. Pair it with khaki pants, and be sure to wear a quality belt. Throw a crewneck sweater over the shirt if the weather is cooler. For a hint of a professional touch, opt for a sport coat over your dress shirt; choose one with a slim cut. Keep your accessories to a minimum as a watch is all you really need.

Grooming Standards

Whether your job interview is in a professional or casual environment, you need to be properly groomed. Get your hair cut a few days before the interview by a familiar barber; don't try a new look right before a job interview. Shave that morning. If you regularly have facial hair, however, keep it neatly trimmed and professional. If you wear cologne or aftershave, make it light as not to distract or put off the interviewers.

You only get one chance to make a first impression, so how you present yourself at a job interview plays a huge part in the hiring manager's final decision. Consider these tips for men to dress the part for your next job interview.
