Should you Create a Video Resume?

While going the video route may not be for every job seeker, a video resume can definitely help you to stand out from the crowd. That said, there are some items that you should keep in mind when you are making a video resume:

  • Ensure that a video resume is indeed suited to the position that you are applying for. For instance, a video resume may not be appreciated if you are applying for jobs at more traditional – and conservative – organizations. That said, a video resume may be more appropriate if you are applying to a new media or innovative marketing firm.

  • Make sure that you dress in a professional manner – as a rule of thumb, you should dress like you were attending a face-to-face interview.

  • Make sure that you come across as both relaxed and confident in the video. A good way to appear this way on video is to be prepared. In other words then, it is a good idea for you to write a script to follow – and practice your speech - ahead of time.

  • Discuss only relevant topics in the video. For instance, you should talk about professional accomplishments – and not personal information. More specifically, you should discuss how an organization will benefit by hiring you. You should also remember to use proper manners and thank the viewers for their time and consideration.

  • Ensure that the quality of the video resume is high before you submit the video. For example, you should ensure that the background, lighting and the audio quality of the video is high. Additionally, you should make sure that other video production elements in the video are top-notch.

  • Keep the video short and sweet. You do not need to list all of your accomplishments in the video. Instead, you should keep the video short – and talk about why you would make a great employee, but let your regular resume explain the particulars.

  • After you finish the video, get a friend or family member to review the video. If they think that certain changes should be made, you should consider making the appropriate changes.

All set to use a video in your job hunt? Great! Simply include a link to your video within the body of your regular resume. You can also upload the video to various websites that include social networking sites and other career-related websites.
