Summer Styles that Stick to the Dress Code

Posted by in Career Advice

Every summer companies send out memos to employees reminding them of the dress code and expectations for warm weather wardrobe. This is the season where casual and comfort lines are often crossed in what people wear to work. It’s important to stay on top of fashion trends and still present a professional appearance.

Whether you’re currently employed, at an interview or even handing in an application, what you wear can affect your career success. Almost every employee handbook and hiring manager will tell you there are three common summer garments won’t work at work.

No shorts – Even if the job you are applying for will put you in shorts you shouldn’t wear them to meet with management until after you’ve landed the job.

Skip the flips – I live in flip flops year round but I put on a pair of close-toed pumps for every professional appointment I have, even at the beach.

Thanks but no tanks – Tank tops, sleeveless and undershirts are about as unprofessional as you can get when selecting what to wear to an interview.

Show more style than skin by staying on top of what’s hot in fashion trends for the summer season.

Men can count on button down retro tops or casual blazers to keep it contemporary and turn heads in an interview. Team tailored silhouettes with multi-layered separates to stay cool on the ride but still sizzle with style in the office.

Last year’s 50’s and 60’s inspired dresses are on the way out for women who want to stay ahead of the competition on and off the runway. With the anticipation of Baz Luhrmann's upcoming 3-D retelling of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio, vintage inspiration this year is coming from the roaring 20s.

Include some of these classic clothes to your closet to come off as confident and cultured at your next interview:

  • Collarless blouse
  • Boucle suit jacket
  • Floral belted shift dress
  • Pin-tuck knee-length skirt
  • Pencil Skirt
  • Add ornate Baroque accessories like Luxe cuffs or keep it simple and professional with a document clutch.

If you would rather stick with your go-to suit, add some pop colors that are spot on for the summer season. This year the colors designers are dying for are:  Poppy, Geranium, Orangeade, Canary, Grass, Tiffany Blue, Hyacinth, Ink, Honey, and Sandstone.

Keeping your fashion choices fresh speaks well of you without having to say a word. In interviewer will see that you are in touch with trends and a good choice to represent the company if you can successfully blend what’s current with what’s corporate when it comes to clothing.
