The Portable Resume

Posted by in Career Advice

When you're job hunting you know that you're always on. You're always looking for opportunities, even when you're just out casually or out for reasons other then looking for employment. But who wants to carry around their resume with them at all times? Especially since to remain professional folding, crumpling or creasing a resume is frowned upon. So how do you stay prepared if an unexpected opportunity arises? The baby resume – The business card.

In this technical age the business card has taken on a whole new life. It allows us to have all of our information available at all times. Email, websites, phone numbers, addresses can all be quickly and easily distributed to anyone who needs the information. With the addition of QR codes, it's even easier to share large amounts of information on a tiny slip of paper.

Many people will tell you, you have no need for a business card until you have a job to promote. This is an archaic thought pattern. Technology now allows you to link your resume directly to your card making it simple and quick to make sure people have access to your wide range of qualifications. When looking for employment your job is to promote YOURSELF. If businesses use their business cards to promote their business, why wouldn't you use a card to promote who you are?

There are numerous websites that allow you to design and print your own cards, but Craig Silva of Big Daddy Kreativ says “A designer can take your thoughts and visions, give it an outside point of view (still keeping it all about the individual). It is branding for the individual. As seen on many occasions, an individual can leave off important info they wished was on there, which they only realize once they received them back from their local "budget" print shops or inexpensive "do-it-yourself" online vendors. A designer will provide you with a few customized design ideas, that have all the information that should be there, and provide you with personalized customer service. They care, as it is a personal reflection of their name / brand / reputation. ”.

So get out there and hand out your mini resume, you never know whose hands it will end up in.
