Tips for feeling feminine while working a physical job

Posted by in Career Advice

Sometimes as a woman in the utilities field, when you work with so many men it’s easy to forget you’re not just one of the guys. You’re comfortable with your job and the company you keep with your co workers but sometimes it’s hard to feel that boost of self confidence that comes with flaunting a little feminine flair.

If your job offers you the opportunity to purchase your own safety gear you can make sure none of the guys borrow yours by thinking pink. From harnesses to hard hats, boots to belts, and lanyards to safety glasses, you can find quality products with women’s designs produced in pink. If pink’s not your thing, aqua blue is a popular option too.

Whether you just want to accessorize or go all out there is a growing market of vendors catering specifically to the needs of today’s tradeswomen. SafetyGirl, GirlyLock, and Moxie Trades are companies that carry construction and safety gear for women who want to look good and feel comfortable while at work.

Remember to take the time and pamper the skin you’re in. Don’t skimp if there’s a body lotion you’re especially fond of using unless the odor is offensive to others. Find something with a subtle scent and use it to keep your skin hydrated and your hands from cracking.

If you work with your hands, instead of using polish and tips try trimming and buffing your nails. It will give you the effect of a French manicure without having to worry about chipping or flaking. Instead spoil yourself with a pedicure. You’re on your feel all day anyway. Treat your toes to some attention.

When it comes to makeup take the less is more approach. Avoid chapping and keep your lips lush by picking a lip balm with a gloss or a sparkle. Keep it light and it will look natural and effortless not like your femininity is false or forced. Usually the lip gloss and a light swipe of mascara is all you really need to get you through the day.

What’s important is that you feel comfortable and confident.
