News about the manufacturing industry often dominates the national news cycle. When it comes to manufacturing news, both positive and negative developments get a great deal of visibility. When you understand the factors that affect manufacturing visibility, you can use them to help your company create a strong media strategy.

The manufacturing sector is a central player in the economy of the United States; as a result, it gets a great deal of attention in the media. According to the Roosevelt Institute, the manufacturing industry is the most important contributor to the growth of the economy. Without a strong manufacturing sector, the Institute states, the economy cannot grow in a sustainable manner over the long term. Each new technological development requires manufacturers that can produce the appropriate components and devices.

In the US, the manufacturing industry is moving into a new place in the economy, and the shift is resulting in even more visibility. Increasingly, manufacturing and development are becoming integrated, which enables businesses to move through the prototyping and production cycle with greater speed. With new technology like 3-D printers, the manufacturing industry is able to increase profits while decreasing costs. Although it is not expected to regain all of its former strength, the industry continues to be a crucial economic player.

Government attention is another key factor in manufacturing visibility. In the past several years, President Obama has created a number of manufacturing initiatives designed to improve the industry's strength in the United States. The President has pledged more than $200 million to the creation of new manufacturing institutes, with the aim of creating efficient technology to move the industry forward. With the high level of interest from the federal government, manufacturing news gets a significant amount of attention from bloggers, journalists, and television reporters.

In 2014, the government is expected to continue to focus on the manufacturing industry. According to a recent story from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, President Obama called for an increase in high-tech manufacturing jobs in the coming months. After the 2014 State of the Union Address, Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew made a point to visit a manufacturing facility in Virginia. While he was at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, Lew met with researchers and spoke about the President's focus on job creation. As Lew and other government officials continue to bring attention to manufacturing in the United States, the visibility of the industry will grow.

For manufacturing companies, the high visibility of the manufacturing industry can be used as an advantage. By paying attention to current manufacturing events and pitching related stories to your local news outlets, you can increase your company's name recognition and reputation.
