Utilities Jobs Getting Greener

Posted by in Career Advice

If you’re looking for a job in the utilities industry and you like the idea of working in a “green” environment, there’s good news. Utilities are using more renewable energy sources and adopting more efficient operating and distribution methods.

The goal is to cut down on wasted energy and use less energy overall in delivering power, water or gas. Distribution lines are increasingly being designed with an eye toward efficiency and lower maintenance. A growing number of utilities are involving workers at every level in their efforts to become more “green.” This includes engineers and engineering technicians, operations managers, boiler operators, power line installers and repair crews.

A number of green utilities careers involve researching, proposing, implementing, and monitoring technology and processes to reduce air and water pollution. Here, engineers, engineering technicians, plant operators and managers are needed as utilities upscale their green efforts.

Utilities that generate energy from wind, solar, solid waste, or geothermal will need electricians, industrial machinery mechanics, and power plant operators. Also needed will be engineers, managers, and compliance officers to ensure environmental policy compliance and to educate consumers about energy and water efficiency.

One company making strides in green utilities is NRG Energy. It owns and operates one of the country’s largest and most diverse power generation portfolios. Their power plants provide more than 24,000 megawatts of generation capacity and include nuclear, wind, solar, natural gas and coal. Check out NRG's career opportunities.
