Want A Promotion? Part 2

Posted by in Career Advice

In Want a Promotion, Part 1, we discussed ways to achieve the promotion of your dreams in the sales field. I gave you some helpful tips Number One through Four and in Part 2, we’ll continue with Numbers Five through Seven.

5. Appropriate behavior: You need to know the difference between how to correctly address the Vice President of your company at a meeting and the greetings you would give a co worker. Do not be late. Lateness is interpreted as the inability to manage your time correctly. Not something you want the higher-ups to think about you when considering you for a promotion. Dress correctly, you are judged on appearance whether you know it or not. Coming in with an wrinkled shirt or a skirt with a stain on it will lessen your chances. First impressions are difficult to overcome.

6. Bluffing it and Drama: Don’t talk about things you don’t know about and then try to bluff your way through it. Learn to look at all the information presented and be able to perform a quick analysis to determine causes, effects and variables that come into play. If you don’t know the information, say so, tell the person who requested it that you’ll research it and get back to them as soon as possible. Be well read. Make sure you can have an intelligent discussion about most topics in your area. In addition, do not bring drama to work. Learn what a crisis actually is and is not and act like you have it under control. Emotional outbursts and temper tantrums are not welcome or appreciated at work. Also, don’t be afraid to be yourself. If you’re not genuine, people will know it. No one likes a pompous boor but don’t be afraid to talk about an occasional coupe if the occasion warrants it.

7. Treat people with respect: Treat all people within your company with respect and courtesy . If you have a question about something, don’t be afraid to ask. Being able to see things from another person’s point of view, whether you agree or disagree, will be a big help in the future. Word travels quickly and people have long memories. You never know when you’ll run across them again or in what capacity. The mail person that you were rude to last week could be your new boss next month.

I hope these tips will help you in your quest for a promotion. Most of it is just plain common sense and courtesy, something we all can use a little review on.

Questions and comments, as always, are welcome.
