There are many people out there who think that career mentoring is something that is only neccessary if you are just starting out in your career field or if you are struggling and need help. Although those are great times to find a mentor, it isn't the only reason. In fact, mentoring is something that can be of benefit throughout your career.

When you are looking for a job or working toward a promotion, mentoring others can help you almost as much as it helps the other person. When you think about it, mentoring is simply helping someone else grow in their career. Especially if you have been in your career field for some time, there are plenty of things you have to share.

When you mentor someone, you get the benefit as well. By teaching skills, you actually reinforce those same skills in your life. Here are some of the benefits of mentoring:

  • You understand the industry better.
  • You become more aware of how people view you.
  • You create a larger network of professionals.
  • You can get a new perspective on problems.
  • You get satisfaction knowing that you are making a difference.

Studies have shown over and over that the careers of mentors are positively affected almost as much as the mentee's career. In fact, people who mentor are more frequently given promotions and raises than people who don't.

It's clear that helping others is one of the best way to help yourself. We all know that the more you give, the more you get back. That's universally true and applies to your professional life just as much as it does to your personal one.

Have you ever had a mentor or mentored someone? What were your experiences? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
