Why Not Relocate?

Posted by in Career Advice

There is an individual with whom I am acquainted, who is an engineer, and was downsized from his company three years ago and still hasn't found a new job. Occasionally, we have a conversation, and I ask him how it is going? He says he hasn’t found anything just yet, but he looks every day. One day he confessed he wasn’t sure what to do. Since he is in his late fifties, he is not old enough to retire. He still wants and needs to work, but he can’t see himself relocating to another part of the country. He is stuck in a rut of self-limiting options. The person he looks at everyday in the mirror is the one who is holding him captive.

For many people, this is a very real quandary. Part of them wants to change, and another part refuses to change. They are aware of jobs out of state, but their fear and uncertainty govern their actions and severely limit their opportunities. It reminds me of the quote that reads, “Too many of us try to tiptoe through life to arrive safely at death.”

Relocating
In a conversation I had the other day with Jim Danielski, a career planning consultant, he explained to me, the people who have the least problem with relocating, are immigrants from other countries. Before they moved to this country, they had already accepted the fact that their career opportunities existed outside of their homeland. In other words, they had overcome their fear of relocating, by seeing the opportunities that existed elsewhere. Now, when they are faced with better employment opportunities in other parts of the country, or the world, they are much more willing to do so.

If you have similar concerns about relocating, here are some questions for you to consider:

• If you were willing to relocate, which states would you consider?
• Does living in a warmer or cooler climate appeal to you?
• Who could you talk to, that has relocated to another part of the country?
• Would you be willing to consider overseas opportunities?
• What kinds of fears or hassles would you first have to address before you could make the decision to relocate?
• Other than a new job, what would be some of the benefits of relocating to another part of the country?

Relocating Opens Up Your Options
When you stop to think about it, relocating can be an exciting and exhilarating option for you, your family and your career. Google the relocation services located in the states to which you would consider moving. If possible, take a vacation in the areas at the top of your list. This would give you a better sense of whether you would be happy living there. Who knows? You just might.
