    The primary purpose of the position is to perform complex tasks on a routine basis which would otherwise be performed by a physician. Provides quality direct and/or indirect patient care clinically, administratively, and/or academically. This is demonstrated in a Medical Oncology practice specializing in all GI Malignancies (colorectal, pancreas, gastric, esophageal, small bowel, neuroendocrine, liver and biliary cancers).

    KEY FUNCTIONS

    Performs some or all of the following

    Outpatient - 70%

    Provides assessment, triage, and management of patient and family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team.

    Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, and dictates progress notes into the medical record.

    Orders and reviews diagnostic tests and radiographic results.

    Formulates and manages patient treatment plans and outcomes.

    Prescribes medications and signs medication orders in accordance with institution and state requirements.

    Coordinates hospital admissions, as needed by the patient and as dictated by training.

    Conducts Hospice referrals and discharge planning.

    Performs advanced patient care diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as paracentesis.

    Coordinates and schedules special procedures with other departments, i.e., Endoscopic procedures, CT-guided biopsies, fine needle aspirations, etc.

    Participates in the education and training of students and other healthcare providers.

    Administrative - 15%

    Occasionally completes disability, insurance forms, and letters of medical necessity for patients.

    Serves as a liaison for new patient referrals and consultations to the department.

    Coordinates patient appointments with physician availability.

    Continuing Education - 5%

    Maintains Physician Assistant certification by achieving the required number of CME hours as stipulated by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

    Attends CME courses related to GI Medical Oncology, as time and funds allow.

    Attends departmental conferences and multidisciplinary meetings, as scheduled.

    May deliver local, state, and national medical presentations.

    Clinical Research - 10%

    Collaborates with the medical staff, research nurse, and other health professionals to complete research initiatives.

    Assesses patients for protocol eligibility.

    Occasionally performs chart reviews.

    EDUCATION

    Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.

    EXPERIENCE

    Preferred

    At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.

    Prior experience with oncology, internal medicine or transplant medicine.

    LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

    Required

    Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

    Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

    MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

    Preferred

    American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
