Our cultural resources team includes experts in architectural history, history, archaeology, GIS, data management, environmental regulations, and planning.

    ICF is currently seeking an experienced Architectural Historian to work in a dynamic, challenging environment on complex environmental compliance projects. This position is based out of our Sacramento or San Francisco, CA offices. Hybrid or full-time remote options will be considered.

    Job Description

    The Architectural Historian will work under the supervision of our cultural resources team leads and job duties will focus on support for CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106 compliance for cultural resource projects in the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento regions. Historic Preservation responsibilities, with direction from senior staff, will include historical research for context statements and property histories; conduct historic resources surveys; compose historical contexts; evaluate properties for National and California Register eligibility; and analyze project impacts/effects. Project coordination responsibilities may include organizing stakeholder outreach correspondence; preparing project team meeting notes; developing and maintaining project staffing trackers; project deliverable coordination; and related project intake and coordination tasks. The candidate may also assist with the preparation of proposals, communication with clients, and tracking project budgets and schedules. This position provides a basis from which to grow a career at ICF in accordance with the candidate's strengths and career interests, including historic preservation planning, regulatory compliance, and/or project management.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Conduct historical research in local, state, and regional libraries and archives.

    • Contribute to historic resources surveys and assessments, including site inspections, research, photography, and evaluation under state and national criteria for historical significance.

    • Prepare historic property inventory forms (including statements of significance and architectural descriptions).

    • Assist with the preparation of CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106 regulatory documents.

    • Collaborate with archeologists, architectural historians, planners, and cultural landscape specialists toward an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to cultural resources investigations.

    • Collaborate on multi-disciplinary compliance teams composed of ICF staff, subconsultants, and agency/client staff.

    • Assist with project coordination under the direction of senior technical staff and project management teams.

    • Serve as a liaison to assist technical staff on project teams.

    • Coordinate project deliverables with document production staff.

    • Monitor project scopes, schedules, and budgets.

    • Organize and facilitate meetings (such as preparing agendas and preparing meeting summaries).

    • Communicate with clients, stakeholders, and agency staff about data needs and related organizational tasks.

    • Track outreach correspondence with stakeholder groups.

    Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Historic Preservation or related field plus at least 3 years of professional experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field plus at least 5 years of applicable professional experience.

    Preferred Skills/Experience

    • Operational knowledge of the history and architectural history of Northern California.

    • Familiarity with San Francisco-specific cultural resources environmental review processes.

    • Familiarity with the California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 form sets.

    • Experience with research at the California Historical Resources Information System Information Centers and processing Information Center results.

    • Prior experience implementing historic preservation regulations, especially CEQA and NHPA Section 106.

    • Experience working with diverse community stakeholders and groups.

    • Demonstrable research and technical writing abilities, especially with the ability to present clear, precise, and authoritative arguments. Writing samples may be requested.

    • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage and track data, project deliverables, and schedules.

    • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project)

    Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:

    $72,402.00 - $123,084.00
