  • The University of Virginia's Department of English/Program in Creative Writing (~~~/) -one of the nation's highest-ranked programs - invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Poetry, expected to begin Fall semester 2024. We are looking for candidates who can teach undergraduate and graduate workshops and seminars in poetry and poetics, with demonstrable experience in a subgenre such as creative nonfiction, literary translation, graphic narrative, writing for performance, etc, a plus. Teaching responsibilities will be a 2/2 load. We seek candidates with promise of continued creative excellence, a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a readiness to assume service responsibilities within the Creative Writing Program-candidates whose skills and experiences will advance the University's ambition to cultivate the most vibrant community in higher education in order to prepare students to be leaders in a diverse and globally connected world.

    An MFA or equivalent required;

    One book of poetry from a nationally recognized press, with two books strongly preferred;

    Substantial publication in journal venues preferred;

    2 years of college-level teaching experience after receiving the MFA preferred, as well as experience/interest in teaching at the graduate level;

    Promise of continued creative excellence, a commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a readiness to assume service responsibilities within the Creative Writing Program.
