    Job Summary:

    Teledyne FLIR is seeking a Biochemist (Microbiologist) to join the interdisciplinary team in our West Lafayette, IN location. The primary role will include microbiological and biochemical assay development and implementation. This includes working in prokaryotic systems, culturing and handling microorganisms using aseptic technique, design, and execution of colorimetric/fluorescence-based plate reader assays of biomolecules such as lipids, proteins and nucleic acids, and sample preparation for further instrumental analysis. The individual will work with a R&D team of Scientists and Engineers to support projects with relevance to biological threat detection.

    Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Culture and handle microorganisms using aseptic technique.

    • Prepare biological samples for subsequent analysis (e.g., biochemical assays, instrumental analysis).

    • Implement and optimize plate-based assays.

    • Execute large, complex experiments in a timely and accurate manner.

    • Maintain a current knowledge of biochemical scientific literature.

    • Prepare and present experimental results following Good Document Practices.

    • Communicate results at team meetings, contribute to project and experiment planning.

    • Interface and productively collaborate with members of cross-organizational teams.

    • Contribute to development projects including planning, experimental design, data analysis and interpretation.

    • Ensure a clean, organized lab environment.

    • Working conditions include potential exposure to infectious agents.

    • Other projects or responsibilities as needed.

    Job Qualifications:

    • BS required, MS preferred with 0-4 years relevant experience.

    • Prior education and relevant work experience, preferably in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, or a related discipline.

    • Experience working in prokaryotic systems including culturing and handling using aseptic technique is required.

    • Prior experience with bacterial endospores is a plus.

    • Experience with colorimetric/fluorescence-based plate reader assays is required.

    • Understanding of biochemical assays such as ELISA, FRET, and SPR is desired.

    • Experience with liquid handing robots is a plus.

    • Good knowledge of wet chemistry and standard chemical calculations is required.

    • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

    • Ability to learn quickly and work in a collaborative environment.

    • Team player, results oriented and able to work in multidisciplinary teams.

    • Creativity, strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.

    • Ability to organize tasks and work independently; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to use science literature and reference texts; ability to keep accurate records; ability to work safely.

    • Computer skills (Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, is expected).

    • Laboratory environment, must adhere to all standard microbiological lab safety practices.

    • Able and willing to travel approximately 10%.

    • Applicants must be either a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, legal permanent resident, asylee, refugee or must be eligible to apply for and obtain the appropriate export control license from the U.S. Departments of State or Commerce.
