Biologist/Botanist
POWER Engineers Inc. is seeking a full-time Biologist with a focus on botanical resources for our Environmental Division - Rocky Mountain Biology Department. This position will be a full-time, remote-based from the Pacific or Mountain time zone. Employees may travel to a POWER office for periodic meetings.
Roles and responsibilities
POWER is seeking a mid-level biologist to assist and lead field biological assessments and ecological projects located across the western United States, with a particular focus on Nevada, California, and the southwest. This position requires identifying protected plant species through protocol-level surveys and noxious weeds, conducting habitat assessments, as well as organizing and summarizing field-collected data, and compiling survey reports. As a Biologist you will support and help build the environmental project team focused on transmission and distribution lines, fire hardening, renewable energy, transportation projects, environmental surveys, NEPA analyses, and permitting services. Responsibilities will include tasks related to botanical field survey efforts, ESA Section 7 consultation, and associated state and federal permits in the western United States.
The position will be filled by a detail-oriented candidate, with a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment. The candidate must have the experience to complete and work as part of teams conducting biological field surveys primarily focusing on vegetation but will also support avian, wildlife, wetland/waterway, and sensitive species/T&E species surveys. As some of the work for this position is in the field, effective communication skills are important for success in this role.
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Botany, Environmental Science, or another related field
Three (3 )+ years prior consulting work, ideally with linear corridor projects, e.g., pipelines and/or electric transmission
Substantial biological field survey knowledge with a focus on botanical resources
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Attention to detail and commitment to quality and professionalism
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Must be willing and able to travel throughout the region with potential travel throughout the U.S.
Additional Experience of Value
Master's degree in Biology, Botany, Environmental Science, or other related field
Certification or licensure in the field of expertise. CWB, PWS, PMP, or other professional designation preferred
Experience in construction compliance monitoring
Western US transmission and distribution system experience
Experience scoping and estimating costs for ecological survey projects
Demonstrated experience with protocol-level botanical surveys for federally, state, or agency-listed plant species
Relevé survey experience
Permitting experience including:
Western state and local permitting
Clean Water Act - US Army Corps of Engineers Section 404 permit/401 Water Quality Certification
USFWS Section 10 and 7 consultation
National Environmental Policy Act/California Environmental Quality Act
Experience in writing and managing the preparation of technical reports or permit applications
Experience organizing, managing, and participating in complex field survey efforts for transmission line, pipeline, or renewable energy projects.

Salary DOE: The pay range for this position is $ 43K - $105K per year; however, base pay may be higher or lower depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This figure does not include additional compensation such as health benefits, vacation, 401k, etc.
