  • What You Will Do

    This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

    The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division, Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Engineering Operations and Physics (J-6) Group is looking for a controls technician to provide support with control system fabrication, installation, and troubleshooting. J-6 provides state-of-the-art capabilities to support the Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL's) hydrodynamic test mission. J-6's core responsibilities include physics, diagnostics and data acquisition, controls, timing, pulsed power, mechanical, and operations necessary for the operation of the two accelerators at the DARHT facility. Additionally, J-6 personnel execute R&D efforts in support of accelerator capability development. The Engineered Systems Tec position will be filled as a level 1 or 2, depending on the skills and level of experience of the selected candidate.

    Engineered Systems Tec 1 ($43,000-$66,500)

    As an Engineered Systems Tec 1, the selected candidate will work with a diverse group of scientists, engineers, technologists, and technicians on projects and programs for DARHT. The selected candidate will receive training on the specific hardware used on both accelerators. In addition, the selected candidate will support, troubleshoot, and maintain the dual-axis electron beam accelerator's PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, and SCADA-based controls system.

    Participate in the diagnosis of failures or malfunctions that occur in the hardware sections of the control system. Take part in troubleshooting, repairing, or replacing equipment as needed, using detailed drawings, diagrams, sketches, manuals, and verbal or written instructions. Participate in documenting existing and future control hardware systems and components. Assist during systems shutdowns, upgrades, or installations. Assist in the fabrication, installation, testing, documentation, and operation of hardware control system test stands. Adhere to the principles of Formality of Operations including Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Engineering, and Conduct of Training.

    Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($52,400-$80,600)

    As an Engineered Systems Tec 2, the selected candidate will perform all the job duties outlined for the Engineered Systems Tec 1 position. In addition, the selected candidate will be able to recommend or perform appropriate solutions as needed. The selected candidate will also be able to perform the job duties outlined for Engineered Systems Tec 1 under minimal supervision.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Experience using standard shop tools such as wrenches, drills, crimpers, punchers, etc.

    • Ability to work safe and maintain work area neat and organized.

    • Basic knowledge of electrical components and diagnostic tools such as DVM.

    • Ability to follow established work procedures to perform the job outlined.

    • Demonstrates ability to work well with others in a mentor/protégé environment.

    • Displays willingness and eagerness to learn and displays a positive attitude while in training.

    Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 2 :

    In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:

    • Demonstrates entry-level knowledge and understanding how to assemble, disassemble, modify, rework, reassemble, and test entry-level electrical/mechanical experimental or prototype assemblies and subassemblies according to specifications.

    • Ability to understand and follow wiring diagrams.

    • Ability to troubleshoot wiring and verify low voltage signals using multimeters.

    Education/Experience at Engineered Systems Tec 1 level: Position typically requires a high school diploma and a minimum 1-2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Education/Experience at Engineered Systems Tec 2 level: Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience using field devices such as thermocouples, transducers, motors, relays, transmitters, valves, etc.

    • Strong computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets, and data acquisition and plotting.

    Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) .     Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.     New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
