  • What You Will Do

LocatedThe Nuclear Materials Science Group (MST-16) is seeking outstanding and highly motivated candidates for the position of Scientist 2 on the Corrosion Team. MST-16 is an international leader in plutonium science and engineering and supports a variety of fundamental to applied programs, including Plutonium Modernization, Pit Surveillance, Science Programs, Life Extension programs, various global security programs, and Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) projects. MST-16 maintains a multidisciplinary expertise in actinide materials science and engages in multiple areas central to laboratory missions, including materials characterization, phase stability, mechanical and dynamic properties, aging, electronic structure, corrosion, and surface science. Our work takes place in the Plutonium Facility (PF-4), the Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building (RLUOB), the Target Fabrication Facility (TFF), and numerous other facilities at LANL and across the country.

The successful candidate will make significant contributions to corrosion research. The successful candidate is expected to execute a variety of plutonium materials science investigations to expand our understanding of plutonium surface science and corrosion. Research activities will include the study of surface and bulk corrosion behavior, gas-surface reactions, and catalytic properties of actinide materials. The candidate will be expected to contribute significantly to a variety of tasks, including data analysis and interpretation, sample preparation, authoring internal reports and technical publications in peer-reviewed journals, and supporting the successful completion of programmatic milestones and deliverables. Although the position is primarily focused on experimental work aimed at the scientific study of actinide material corrosion, participation in research addressing other plutonium research areas will be required.
