  • What You Will Do

    This position will be filled at the lower or higher level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

    The DARHT Engineering, Operations, and Physics Group (J-6) is seeking two (2) Engineered Systems Tecs to join the Mechanical and Engineering Team. J-6 provides state-of-the-art accelerator, pulsed power, beam-target, and radiographic physics capabilities in support of LANL's hydrodynamic test mission. Core responsibilities of the Mechanical and Engineering Team include: (a) troubleshooting, maintaining, and upgrading of the Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) accelerator mechanical systems (water, glycol, vacuum, mechanical alignment, etc.), and (b) designing, modeling, developing, and implementing new mechanical systems to support the DARHT accelerators.

    DARHT Mechanical Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($51,200 - $78,700)

    As a mechanical Engineered Systems Tec 2, you will assist in the maintenance of mechanical systems and subsystems at DARHT and around the DARHT complex. Tasks include maintenance and troubleshooting of hardware.

    This will require

    • The ability to execute basic maintenance or new equipment installations with verbal and/or written instructions

    • Being able to read and understand mechanical diagrams

    • Experience using tools to work on mechanical systems

    • General knowledge of mechanical systems (pumps, piping, filters, etc.)

    • The capability to work in a team environment

    • A willingness to acquire new skills and step out of your comfort zone

    • Being a fast learner

    DARHT Mechanical Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($56,300 - $87,200)

    In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, this level requires the following:

    • An application of mechanical systems knowledge to include vacuum systems, knowledge of LANL policies and principles, and a thorough understanding and wide application of maintenance practices for mechanical and vacuum systems.

    • A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair problems on mechanical and vacuum systems of moderate complexity using standard diagnostic equipment, while referencing to OEM provided drawings, diagrams, specifications, schematics, and manuals.

    In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requ i res:

    • Demonstrated apprentice type skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and/or equipment.

    • Proficiency with mechanical and/or vacuum systems and processes.

    • Proven experience working to a set of defined requirements and regulations.

    Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Education/Experience at higher level Position require an Associate Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience with high vacuum equipment.

    • Experience working on pumping and pressure systems.

    • Experience in reading mechanical drawings.

    • Strong computer skills, including word-processing, spreadsheets, and data acquisition and plotting.

    • DOE Q clearance

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.     New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
